Biological Science Technician
The incumbent performs technical assignments consisting of routine laboratory and/or field experiments that require the use of accepted, standardized practices. Assists in the processing, testing, and packaging of native plant material and/or seed. The assignment involves the use of specialized seed equipment and must be completed according to established protocol. Reports all methods used in a professional and detailed manner. Assists in the acquisition of field data by measuring and recording pertinent biological information involving the performance of a series of related technical tasks, which must be completed according to a predetermined and established routine. Tabulates and orders data as directed and prepares data for computer use. Assists in the layout of experimental plots by taking measurements and marking corners and boundaries. Aids in design of research case studies in regards to seed. Uses botanical key to identify plants and/or plant components. Uses botanical references for plant physiology. Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens. All biological data pertinent to collections and preservation are recorded. Assists in maintenance of various collections used in connection with day-to-day research activities. Observes and records in detail the processing protocols used for each task. (6) Six months of general experience and (6) six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 grade level. General Experience is defined as:
Farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; work in a greenhouse, nursery or landscape business tending plants and performing general labor tasks; or worked as an animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store; or other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. Specialized experience is defined as:
Participating in plant-related projects by assisting with measurements, recording observations, and assisting with the collection of biological and vegetation specimens. -OR Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled such as botany or related plant sciences. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above. Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
